My daughter is only just turned ten and it seems like she's already into the teen-age rebellious attitude thing.  Does it really start this early? And the more I seem to put my foot down about her uncooperative behavior and disrespectful attitude, the more I get it.  I want to nip this in the bud before it gets completely out of hand, but I've taken away every privilege and I feel like I'm punishing her all the time.  And it's not going away. Where has that joyful little girl gone?

Oh yes, it starts that early. I hear Moms in my office complain exactly like you all the time. Yet from the moment the umbilical cord is cut, kids start separating - sounds like she's testing her wings. The new word is "negotiate" as she moves into the tween/teen years. She needs to know you're on her team - stick to what you want, but start with ... you're on her side. It's just too easy for us to react rather than respond. I'd love to share what kids have told me over the years in the Top Ten Things Kids Most Want and Need From Their Parents. Just go to my website www.ImageryForKids.com and sign up for it or listen to the wonderful inteview Victoria did with me on her radio show. Don't despair - you have a lot of years ahead and your daughter needs you.
Let me know how it goes. All the best, Dr. Charlotte Reznick
